Alta Baja Sur
Bad Roads Good People
San Sebastian, Bahia Concepcion
This is a fun off-road tour of the south and east sides of Bahia Concepcion. It includes visits to a remote oasis ranch out on the peninsula, the gated community at San Sebastian Cove and the remote coastal fishing and ranching village of San Nicolas. An oasis canyon hike, challenging but fun coastal and mountain driving terrain, and breathtaking coastal vistas are the highlights of this trip.
This trip starts with a fun 4x4 sand-flats route that goes east from Highway 1 along the south end of Bahia Concepcion.
Tidal sand flats and coastal trails bring us north to the east side of the bay to a remote oasis “Rancho el Salto” in the foothills. Take a quick hike from the old dam into the palm oasis, or check out the cave art in the cliffs near the ranch.
We then continue south and east through coastal mountains to San Sebastian Cove, a gated coastal village, for a lunch break in the palm oasis to hear stories from local fishermen and caretakers.
The next section of trail to the south climbs the steep coastal cliffs on a very challenging 4x4 trail and continues along the coast to the fishing and farming oasis of San Nicolas, and then back to Highway 1 on the main road.
Most of this route is moderate, fun and easy 4x4/moto terrain aside from some sand-bogs and salt-mud flats that can be challenging.
However, there is one steep narrow rocky canyon-crawl section to the south of San Sebastien that requires a high level of driving skill and a well equipped 4x4 or dirtbike. This section of “road” is not maintained and is rarely used. But it is passable if you know what you’re doing and like a challenge. This trip is not for novice 4x4 or motorcycle drivers. If in doubt, take a Ride-along trip first.
