Rancho Gregorio, Bahia Concepcion
This hidden oasis ranch is high in the mountains west of Highway 1 about halfway down Bahia Concepcion. It features a large cave, ancient cave art, a lush fruit tree oasis and a large stone “swimming pool” cistern that is continually filled by a gushing mountain spring. This scenic trip includes an oasis picnic, a swim in the pool & short hikes to the mountain cave and spring head.
After a stunning drive on a rough, windy and rocky 4x4 trail up this deep, tall canyon we’ll stop for a 1km hike to a large cave with ancient paintings on the property.
Our host is the property owner who was born on this land 75 years ago, accompanied by our interpreter. The original ranch and water works were built by his grandfather over 100 years ago.
You will be impressed by the abundant wildlife and interesting history of this region, along with the wisdom and humor of the ranch owner.
After the cave paintings tour we’ll continue our drive for several more kilometers to the original ranch site of this property, high up the side of the mountain range.
Suddenly you’ll find yourself in a lush green oasis full of date palms, mangos, citrus, figs, papaya and many other types of trees, grass and herbs.
Old stone corrals and ruins of stone structures make a strong impression as you arrive. After a quick tour of the original ranch and oasis we’ll have lunch in the shade of the trees around the “swimming pool.”

You can take a relaxing dip in the pool and a short guided hike up the side of the mountain to the spring head where you’ll see the remnants of an old concrete aqueduct that was hand-made into the side of the mountain.

Or just soak up the clean flowing spring water and the majestic high elevation views of the mountains and wildlife all around us.
