San Jose de Magdalena

This is a beautiful and challenging 130 mile loop from Mulege west and up into the high Sierra de Guadalupe mountains, then north and east into San Jose de Magdalena and back to Mulege. Multiple remote ranch oasis stops, ranchero lunch, tour & swimming in mountain springs.

This is one of our most challenging high elevation drives with amazing scenery on a 4x4 route that is often “closed” and rarely used. There are several steep canyon crawls and boulder fields that require expert level off-road vehicles and driving skills. We recommend "Ride-along" trips for anyone who isn't looking for a challenging driving experience.

From Mulege we head west up into the Sierra de Guadalupe mountains on moderately challenging terrain, stopping at multiple remote rancher oasis points along the way.

A ranchero lunch, ranch tour and spring-fed swimming hole is provided by our friends who live in the middle of the peninsula, high in the mountains down the beginning of the western slope.

After lunch we start the difficult part of the drive north past the abandoned Guadalupe Mission oasis & ruins, followed by a steep and rough high climb east toward San Jose de Magdalena.

After a break at the top for scenic views, we begin the steep long downhill ascent down a road that clings to the side of a cliff. This route is steep and rough, and is often closed due to rock slides (we always verify it is passable before beginning a trip).

As we continue east through vast open canyons with stunning mountain terrain, we eventually pass into the small village of San Jose de Magdalena, famous for its abundant water, lush vegetation and garlic production.

This route is ONLY for experienced drivers with well equipped off-road vehicles. There are many steep rough sections where one mistake can get you into real trouble. In many cases there is no way to backup or turn around. If you are in doubt about your driving capabilities or your vehicle, chose the Ride-along option.
