"Camino No Real" to San Juanico, Scorpion Bay

This is an 85 mile one-way "Follow the Guide" in your own vehicle trip from Mulege to San Juanico on "Camino No Real" through the Guadalupe mountains. It includes a remote ranchero lunch, ranch tour and spring-water swimming hole with multiple other ranchero oasis stops. This is a rarely-traveled route to San Juanico, aka “Scorpion Bay,” through some of Baja’s most remote mountain wilderness. Breathtaking vistas, challenging but fun roads and connections with remote Ranchero families are the highlights.

We leave Mulege heading southwest through sandy and rocky arroyo trails and then up steep twisty mountain passes through the Guadalupe mountains, stopping at multiple remote rancher oasis points along the way.

The terrain ranges from desert canyon landscapes to towering mountains and lush oasis points and stunning beaches on each end of the trip. We call this "Camino No Real" because the road often disappears and becomes "impassable" after a major rain event.

A ranchero lunch, ranch tour and spring-fed swimming hole is provided by our friends who live in the middle of the peninsula, high in the mountains down the beginning of the western slope.

There are many remote ranches in the mountains of Baja Sur, most of which have been in the same families for 200 to 300 years since the days of the Jesuit Missions. This region of northern Baja Sur has more ranches and ancient cave paintings than any other part of the peninsula.

This day-trip is more expensive than most trips because of expenses for our Mulege-based guides to return to Mulege.
