Guadalupe Magdalena Loop

This is a beautiful and challenging 130 mile loop from Mulege to San Jose de Magdalena then up into the high Guadalupe mountains about halfway across the Baja peninsula, then back to Mulege. Multiple ranch tours include a goat cheese-making demonstration and 5 star ranchero lunch.

This is a moderately challenging drive with amazing scenery on a 4x4 route that is often “closed” and rarely used. There are several steep canyon crawls and boulder fields that require expert level off-road vehicles and driving skills. We recommend "Ride-along" trips for anyone who isn't looking for a challenging driving experience.

From Mulege we head northwest to San Jose de Magdalena, a mountain oasis town famous for its abundant water, lush vegetation and garlic production. First stop is a ranch in the foothills west of the village, where we take a ranch tour and witness a live goat cheese-making demonstration and "tasting."

Then we drive west and up a steep canyon crawl into the Guadalupe mountains on a route that was close for many years until 2024. We'll pass the ruins of the Guadalupe mission, where thousands of people lived in the 1700s and talk to local ranchers about the history of the area.

By early afternoon we'll be halfway across the peninsula for another ranch stop and a home-made ranchero lunch. Enjoy a ranch tour and spring-fed swimming hole and get to know the ranch family.

We then return to Mulege through the Guadalupe mountains with a steep long downhill ascent through narrow canyons with multiple scenic view stopping points.

This route is for experienced drivers with well equipped off-road vehicles. In many cases there is no way to backup or turn around. If you are in doubt about your driving capabilities or your vehicle, chose the Ride-along option.
