What inspired the creation of Alta Baja Sur?The inland mountains, remote beaches and canyon country of Baja Sur are some of the most mystical and majestic scenery on the planet. The mountains between San Ignacio and Ciudad Insurgentes are the heartland of Baja’s “Ranchero” culture, the Sierras de Gigantes and Sierras de Guadalupe. Most of these remote ranches of Baja Sur have been continuously inhabited by the same families for hundreds of years, since the days of the Jesuits in the 1700s. This region is also rich with numerous ancient cave paintings, original Mission sites and remote oasis points. Native legends say the bones of the ancient Giants are also out there somewhere. :-) This is one of the most isolated regions of Baja. The roads are very rough (sometimes requiring “adjustments” to the layout of the boulders). It’s easy to get lost or disoriented, with no cell service and very few people available to help if mechanical trouble or other issues come up. A well-equipped local guide makes all the difference.
